How Does Ring Sizing Work?

Rings are sized on a standardized scale, similar to standard clothing sizes. However, a women’s size 6 ring may vary slightly on the fit from brand to brand (or jeweler to jeweler) just like in clothing. The US and Canada use a numerical scale including whole, half and quarter sizes, whereas other countries commonly follow an alphabetical scale.

The styling of the ring is also important to consider in sizing. If there are gemstones or diamonds all the way around the band, sometimes the ring cannot be re-sized after being made because it will stretch the metal holding the stones in place. The entire ring may need to be re-designed in order to change the size of that type of ring.

Does Jewelry Service Center Offer Ring Sizing?

We offer quick, professional ring sizing in-store. Our craftsmen complete our work on the premises everyday, so we can offer timely and secure services, and a great value. We CAN re-size rings made of the following materials:

  • Yellow Gold
  • White Gold
  • Sterling Silver
  • Platinum
  • Platinaire
  • Gold & Silver School Rings

Unfortunately, rings made of the following materials CANNOT be re-sized, due to the nature of the material:

  • Tungsten
  • Cobalt
  • Stainless Steel
  • Ceramic

It’s always good practice to know what material your jewelry is made of when being purchased or being given as a gift. If you’re unsure what material your ring is made out of or have other questions about sizing, bring your jewelry in and we’ll be happy to help you out!

Find Engagement Ring Size

Engagements & Surprises!

So you’ve decided to propose or surprise your partner with a ring - fantastic! Now you need to figure out what size ring to get without ruining the surprise. See our tips below for ways to find their ring size without him or her knowing:

  • Ask your partner’s Mom or best friend. Sometimes the parents or closest friends know this information from buying previous gifts, or your partner may have told them to give you a hint!
  • Borrow one of your partner’s rings and bring it with you on your store visit. Our jewelers can help you determine the size. This will probably get you in the right ballpark, but will be most accurate if you can borrow a ring of theirs that is worn on the exact finger that you want the proposal/gift ring to be worn on.
  • If no information is available to you, use statistics to help. The average woman’s ring size is 6-6.5, and the average men’s ring size is 9-10.
  • When in doubt, go for a larger ring size. It’s easier to re-size a ring smaller than it is to size it larger. Keep in mind, you also definitely want the ring to be able to slip onto your partner’s finger when you’re proposing, even if it’s a little too loose!

Still not sure? No problem, we can work with you to help you figure out the best possible fit! Any information you can provide on your visit will help us to figure out the best solution.
